Palace hold Arsenal
A bit of a lacklustre match at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal secure in second and Crystal Palace looking ahead to their FA Cup semi-final tie against Aston Villa this weekend. The sides still managed to conjure up 4 goals though including a beauty from Jean-Philippe Mateta to earn Palace a point as the match ended 2-2.
The result means that Liverpool now only need to avoid defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to confirm their second PL title.
Leicester City relegation confirmed
The Foxes are setting a number of unwanted records this season, the latest of which saw them lose a 9th consecutive home match without scoring, the longest run in Football League history. Their latest defeat, 1-0 to Liverpool, confirmed relegation back to the Championship next season whilst moving the Reds to within one win of the PL title which they will hope to clinch when their host Tottenham Hotspur this coming weekend, with Spurs themselves setting new club records after going down 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday evening, an 18th league defeat, their most in a 38 game season.
Arsenal won 4-0 away to Ipswich Town to ensure Liverpool had to wait another week to clinch the PL title. The result kept the Gunners comfortably in second place but left the Tractor Boys on the brink of confirming their immediate return to the Championship, now 15 points from safety with 15 points to play for and a far inferior goal difference to West Ham United who sit in 17th place after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to bottom club Southampton. The point allowed the Saints to match Derby County’s record low points tally in the top flight, just 11. 5 matches to get one more point!
Manchester City won at the weekend, 2-0 at Everton, and again last night, 2-1 at home to Aston Villa, scoring in the 94th minute to pinch the win and move themselves back into 3rd place with Villa staying 7th. Forest’s win leaves them 4th with Newcastle United down to fifth following their 4-1 thrashing away to the Villains. Chelsea left it late to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win away to neighbours Fulham to stay in 6th place. Those 5 clubs remain locked in battle for 3 CL qualifying spots.
Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded a 5th straight PL victory to confirm their place in the PL for next season. The latest win was 1-0 away to a Manchester United side still recovering from their extraordinary escape in the Europa League midweek. The 3 points take Wolves level on points with United, the clubs sitting 15th and 14th respectively.
8th place will earn a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League should Crystal Palace fail to win the FA Cup. It may also still earn that spot even if Palace emerge victorious on May 17th should Chelsea win this season’s UEFA Conference League and finish in the top 7 of the PL. If the Blues are victorious on May 28th in Wroclaw but Palace lose to Aston Villa in their upcoming FA Cup semi-final tie then 9th place will get the UCL spot next season. All this means that there is still plenty to play for the sides sitting in 8th down to Palace themselves in 12th. AFC Bournemouth lead that pack but were disappointed to only come away with a single point from a goalless draw away to Crystal Palace after the Eagles were reduced to 10 men just before half-time. The Cherries sit on 49 points in 8th with Palace on 44 in 12th. In-between them come Fulham in 9th on 48 points with Brighton & Hove Albion 10th, also on 48 points, following their 4-2 loss at Brentford at the weekend with the Bees 11th on 46 points.
Below them come some big clubs with Everton, Manchester United, Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur all now safe and West Ham United all but safe.
Leeds United and Burnley secured the top two spots in the Championship this season and promotion back to the PL next season. With the 3 promoted clubs all being relegated the following season in the past 2 PL seasons, lots of questions now going around about whether the 3 promoted sides this time around can buck that trend. It will definitely be a challenge given that the existing PL sides continue to strengthen but if they can keep their place clubs like Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth show that it is possible to make headway and succeed. They just need to stay up!
