Premier League 2026/27

The Premier League 2026/27 season starts tonight when defending champions Arsenal host EFL Champions and newly promoted Coventry City. Kick-off 20.00.

So, what can we expect from the new season? More silly amounts of money have been spent across the division as clubs look to achieve their main aims, whether that be to challenge for the title or simply to stay in the PL another season. Last season Sunderland showed that signing the right players can pay dividends as they not only managed to avoid going straight back down but qualified for European football after a 7th place finish. Everyone had them down as certainties for immediate relegation. Leeds United also survived leaving Burnley as the only promoted club that were relegated after one season. Ipswich Town and Hull City, alongside Coventry City, have spent a lot of money to strengthen their squads as they all look to emulate the Black Cats and the Whites. Will they succeed? The odds are against them. Other clubs have spent heavily after promotion but have still gone back down. Ipswich should benefit from their season in the PL two seasons ago. Coventry were the best side in the Championship last season and have a decent side. Hull probably overachieved by securing promotion after flirting with relegation to League One in previous seasons. They look to be the most vulnerable of the three. One may stay up, probably Ipswich. I think the other two will finish in the bottom three.

Bournemouth, Brighton and Sunderland all qualified for European football this season at the expense of clubs more used to playing in such competitions. It showed how strong and competitive the PL has become. The challenge for those clubs is to maintain that level and compete for European qualification again this season. One issue they will have that they are not used to is the additional matches they will play. Twice weekly in the months leading up to Christmas and potentially beyond. That will test their squad depth. The clubs that failed to qualify for Europe will also be looking to avoid that fate another season. Conversely, they only have domestic football to focus on and should be able to keep their players fresh. It all points to another crowded middle of the table.

As for the title race, it would seem to be set up for Arsenal to successfully defend their first title in 22 years. They have made some good signings to strengthen important areas whilst their main challengers are all under new managers or, in the case of Manchester United, a caretaker manager made permanent. Only 3 clubs have managed to retain the PL title so it is not a given for Arsenal but they are rightfully favourites to do so.

It also all points to another season where predicting the outcome of matches will be tricky. Who will succeed? We are about to find out.
