Arsenal champions

Manchester City failed to end AFC Bournemouth’s long unbeaten run in the PL last night as they could only manage a 1-1 draw and were lucky not to lose with Erling Haaland’s equaliser coming in the 95th minute. That left Arsenal 4 points clear with just 1 match remaining each, enough to secure their 4th PL title, their 14th top flight title in total and the first since the “Invincibles” season back in 2003/04. Congratulations to the Gunners. City do still have both domestic cups to cry their tears into though.

The Cherries have now secured European qualification for the first time in their history and were seconds away from moving to within a point of Liverpool with a real possibility of pinching 5th place off the Reds and definite CL football next season. City’s late reply, however, means they are now 3 points off Liverpool with a worse goal difference. Only 6 goals in it but probably enough that even if Liverpool were to lose at home to Brentford on the final day, Bournemouth would have too much to do away to Nottingham Forest to overtake them. CL football does still remain a possibility for them though should Aston Villa win the EL tonight, Liverpool beat Brentford and Manchester City beat Villa on Sunday. That would leave Villa finishing 5th, the only position they can finish to allow 6th place in the PL to qualify for the CL. Should Bournemouth avoid defeat on Sunday, 6th place will be theirs. Whatever the final outcome, a fantastic season and achievement for Bournemouth.

Manchester City’s victory in the FA Cup Final last weekend means that 7th place in the PL will earn a spot in next season’s EL and 8th place will earn a spot in next season’s Conference League. Brighton & Hove Albion had the chance to secure at least 7th place last Sunday but lost 1-0 away to Leeds United. They still ought to secure at least 8th place regardless of the outcome of their final match at home to Manchester United. A win, coupled with a Bournemouth loss, would actually see them pinch 6th with the aforementioned possible CL spot but even if they fail to win, only a Brentford win at Anfield, together with a positive result between the two other sides that could mathematically overtake them, Sunderland and Chelsea, would see them drop to 9th and out of the European qualifying places altogether. A final day victory for Chelsea would see them secure a European spot for next season barring an extraordinary win for the Bees at Liverpool. A draw might still be enough for the Blues but they would then be sweating on the match at Anfield. Defeat would see them definitely out of Europe next season with Sunderland then sweating on the result at Anfield. Newcastle United downwards are effectively out of the running barring suspicious results.

The battle to avoid filling the final relegation spot will go into the final day after both West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur lost last week. The Irons defeat on Sunday meant that Tottenham realistically only needed to avoid defeat at Chelsea last night to secure PL football next season. Given the home side’s appalling current form and the fact they lost the FA Cup Final just 3 days previously, this was a big opportunity for them to do just that but another nervous looking performance saw them fall to a 2-1 defeat meaning they still need to avoid defeat at home to Everton on the final day to be safe. Even if they lose they may still survive though since West Ham have to beat Leeds United at the London Stadium to have any chance of staying up. They looked terrified before their defeat at Newcastle United last Sunday and started that match very poorly, going 2 goals behind within 20 minutes. They have to avoid that sort of start on Sunday against a Leeds United side in good form.

Premier League Prediction Competition 2024-25 – Session 8, Week 4 (of 5)

Martin got both results last night spot on to sneak the penultimate POTW of the session and season. He scored the same number of points as Helen but his 2 spot on predictions compared to Helen’s 1 meant he took the prize. He has also moved into contention for the Session 8 prize, now just 5 points behind current leader John S with Stefan one point off the lead and John F 1 point behind Martin. A tight finish looks likely to finish the season.

Don’t forget those final predictions!

Prizes are very modest currently due to modest entry. If anyone has friends, family, work colleagues etc… who may be interested in taking part, please pass on an invitation to them. More competitors means bigger prizes.
